Diary #2: Jab Day, and the Silence Where Food Noise Used to Be

By JabFuel Diary

So, having decided to take the plunge — what next?

Finding a provider

I spent quite a lot of time investigating using various sources (Reddit is very good) in terms of where to source the GLP-1 from and which one to use.

I ended up with Bolt as they had good reviews — both online and within the Reddit community — and were competitively priced.

Their sign-up process is encouraging and has to be approved by a pharmacist. Then, based on your inputs, it gives you a few options to choose from.

The process was very good and highly recommended. They even had a WhatsApp service that guides you through all the steps, which was perfect if you aren't sure what you're doing. (If you want to get £40 off your first order, just click this link.)

Wegovy or Mounjaro?

My options were Wegovy and Mounjaro. Although a few people I'd spoken to had been on Mounjaro, I ended up going with Wegovy.

The main reason was that it was cheaper. But also, on some of the forums there had been historical issues with supplies of Mounjaro, and I'd read that if you had to switch to another GLP-1 you had to start again at the smallest dose. I didn't want to take that risk.

So with my order placed, we were all systems go.

Jab day

I have got to say, I was very nervous.

Having attached the needle (simple) and tested the flow (also easy — and you only have to do this with a new pen, not for every dose), I was ready to go.

But I was frozen. It is a real needle. I know it's only minute, but it is a needle.

Eventually courage took over, I took the plunge... and I didn't feel a thing. I felt like a right idiot.

So what happened?

Not much, really.

Obviously I'm not a doctor, but I think the initial dose isn't expected to do much — it's there to make sure you don't have any kind of reaction. I felt pretty much the same. I ate portions that were similar and didn't particularly feel any different.

Except that's not quite true. There was one big difference.

I wasn't obsessing about food.

The noise stopped

Thin people are always quick to tell you "the only way to lose weight is to reduce calorie intake and exercise more."

We know. But how do you stop the noise?

Trying to explain food noise to people sometimes makes you feel like an alien. They don't understand how much time can be spent thinking about food. "Just stop thinking about it." If we could, we would — believe me.

So how did it feel? Really weird, to be honest. To go from constantly thinking about food to not thinking about it at all is a massive change.

I was even in the butcher I go to and managed to visit without buying either a sausage roll or a pork pie for the first time ever. Even though they looked lovely.

The butcher's counter — pork pies and sausage rolls I walked past for the first time ever

The unexpected bonus: drink

The same went for alcohol.

With the weather being so nice, it's so easy to have a drink after work (or earlier, if you're working from home). Historically my wife would have a couple of beers and stop. I would have a couple of beers, then start on the wine and almost finish the bottle.

Now I've found my off button. If I want a drink I can enjoy it, but I can also stop really easily. I've gone from having a drink every day to only having one when I actually feel like it.

It's a game changer.

So what's the upshot?

  • I'm eating similar quantities at meal times to before.
  • I'm not snacking, and I'm not constantly thinking about food.
  • A byproduct I hadn't considered: I'm drinking a lot less alcohol, and it isn't an effort.

In terms of weight loss: before starting on Wegovy I had already been using JabFuel to track my intake, and that alone had helped me drop a couple of pounds. But since being on Wegovy, after the first month I'm down 6 lbs — which I'm thrilled about, especially as it doesn't feel like I'm eating less.

FAQ

How do you choose a GLP-1 provider?

Look for a provider that requires pharmacist approval, has genuine reviews (Reddit communities are surprisingly useful), transparent pricing and real support if you get stuck. I used Bolt and found the guided WhatsApp support especially helpful for the first injection.

Why choose Wegovy over Mounjaro?

For me it came down to cost and supply. Wegovy was cheaper, and I'd read about historic Mounjaro supply issues — and that switching between GLP-1s can mean restarting at the lowest dose. That's a personal decision to make with your prescriber, not medical advice.

Does the first GLP-1 dose do anything?

For me, very little physically — the starting dose is mainly about checking you tolerate the medication. The one clear change was mental: the constant food noise went quiet.

What is food noise?

Food noise is the constant background chatter about what you'll eat next, snacking urges and planning meals in your head. Many GLP-1 users report it dropping away, which is often the first change people notice.

How much weight can you lose in the first month on Wegovy?

I lost 6 lbs in month one on the starting dose, on top of a couple of pounds from tracking with JabFuel beforehand. Everyone's results differ — protein, fiber and hydration matter far more than the number on the scale in week one.
